DHI is a local charity that was set up to help people out of the cycle of homelessness, social isolation and drug or alcohol abuse. Our aim is to offer people a wide range of services that help them gain control of their lives again and live independently.

We provide a comprehensive range of services in Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and Somerset for people who are socially excluded for reasons such as homelessness, alcohol or drug problems, learning disabilities or emotional difficulties.

We help people to turn their lives around by tackling both the causes and consequences of social exclusion through practical and emotional support services such as information, advice, housing, counselling, activities, and employment and training opportunities.

DHI offer a friendly and welcoming drop-in room for clients. This is open Monday - Friday 9.30am - 4.30pm. DHI clients can come in and use the computers, have a cup of coffee and meet with other clients.

Services we Provide

Overview

For those who have decided they wish to address problem drug use, DHI delivers interventions which focus on the present and motivate people to use the skills they already have to achieve their goals and make meaningful changes in their lives.

What we do

The Harm Reduction Service

Provides information and advice to people who may have immediate concerns or problems with their drug use. It includes:

  • A needle exchange service which provides mobile needle and syringe exchange for injecting drug user
  • Screening for blood borne viruses and advice
  • Support and information on reducing harm
  • A stimulant service which is specifically for people using crack, cocaine and amphetamines. This includes quick assessment, key work and group work to support safer use of all stimulants.
  • Naloxone and 'Save a Life' training.
     

Day care and Counselling BaNES

  • Positive Change group - a programme of weekly group meetings for 12 weeks which focus on practical ways of reducing drug use and on keeping motivation high to make a change in lifestyle.
  • Abstinence Group - help to people who have stopped using drugs and need support to stay off. The groups focus on strengths and abilities rather than on problems or labels.
  • Counselling one-to-one with a DHI counsellor.
  • Workshops that tackle practical issues such as managing stress and difficult emotions or being assertive.
  • Early Intervention Worker - member of staff who goes to hospitals and GP surgeries to offer advice and information on cutting down drinking.
  • Women's drop in and group. A safe space for women to come in and talk about thier substance misuse and related issues.
  • referral for opiate substitute prescribing or a detox.

Key working / care co-ordinating

Practical support with developing the personal skills to achieve goals and objectives and meet regularly with service users to plan how personal goals can be met.

Structured Groupwork

Using cognitive behavioural and motivational techniques we offer group work programmes which support clients in the different stages of changing substance using behaviour.

Battle Against Tranquillisers

Open  to those addicted to or affected by tranquillisers and who need information or support. It runs a drop in on Tuesday from 3.30pm to 5pm.

Overview

DHI delivers services to support people in finding and maintaining safe, stable accommodation. In partnership with Knightstone Housing and Somer Community Housing Trust DHI manages 4 supported housing projects. Accommodation is provided for people who have experienced problems with substance use in the past, who are not currently using drugs or alcohol and benefit from support to remain abstinent. DHI floating Support services assist people in housing need to access housing and support them in managing and maintaining their accommodation by offering information and advice on benefits, budgeting and managing their debts. Money for the deposit and.or rent in advance is usually necessary to move into private rented property. DHI runs two schemes which lend homeless clients the money to start a new tenancy.

Reach Floating Support Service provides a combination of practical and emotional support to help people live independently and develop useful life skills. It is run jointly by DHI, and Stonham and Shape.

The support it offers includes advice on housing, benefits, and managing debts; it can also refer clients to other specialist agencies. It can help people to:

  • Find suitable housing
  • Maintain their current housing
  • Understand their housing rights and responsibilities
  • Deal with rent or mortgage arrears
  • Budget effectively
  • Access employment, training and educational courses or services
  • Set up a new home
  • Outreach service - on the streets of Bath at night to offer advice to people sleeping rough or having problems with their housing.


BaNES

HAP Course

REach provide a HAP course (Home Achievement Program) an accredited training scheme which aims to improve individuals knowledge of what it means to be a good tenant and provides a structured program which looks at topics such as:

  • Tenancy Awareness
  • Budgeting
  • Crime and Anti social behaviour
  • Health

Dry House accomodation.

DHI have two dry houses in BANES, Burlington St and Barton Buildings. Burlington st also has a detox bed, specifically for clients who cannot detox at home. Once detoxed the client has the option of moving into the dry house, where they will receive wrap around support and referrals for longer term housing.

Private Rented Access Scheme

DHI run a scheme which lends homeless clients the money to start a new tenancy. Loans are repaid at an affordable rate and within a reasonable timescale. Floating support workers also offer support and advice during those crucial first months setting up home.

Supported Housing

In partnership with Somer Community Housing Trust and Knightstone Housing, DHI run two supported housing projects in the centre of Bath.  DHI also runs supported houses in both Trowbridge and Frome. These shared "dry" houses provide a safe and supportive environment for clients whose lives have been disrupted through problematic substance use who are now committed to an abstinent lifestyle. Residents have their own room with shared facilities.

Home Turf Lettings and Property Management

Home Turf Lettings is a lettings agency with a difference. A not-for-profit social enterprise founded in April 2012, we specialist in residential lettings to tenants in housing needs. 

We offer landlords a comprehensive and professional lettings and property management service, with a particular focus on an area of the rental market which landlords have often struggled - low income and benefit claiming tenants. 

Our mission is to increase the supply of private rental sector housing available to those on housing benefit and low incomes, while also creating work/training opportunities for the socially excluded.

Overview

Brokerage and Information Service.

What we do

Information and Brokerage

This service assists people who are vulnerable (e.g. as a result of a learning or physical disability, mental health problem, older age etc.) who wish to plan and organise the support they need using their assigned budget.

Our Brokerage & Information team helps clients to make the most of this funding by working with clients to draw up a support plan that identifies the help they need and how to access it.

The help could include hiring a personal assistant, for instance, or getting help from other charities or organisations. The aim of the Brokerage service is to promote maximum independence for people.

People receiving personal budgets from social services, or social workers who help them, are welcome to contact the Brokerage service

Overview

DHI run Healthy Families, a free and confidential service for people in BANES who are concerned about drug and alcohol use by people they know well.

Drug and alcohol can harm not just the people who take them but their families, friends and colleagues.

DHI have a service for young people in BANES with problematic substance misuse support needs.

What we do

Healthy Families in BaNES

The Healthy Families service runs groups where those who are concerned can discuss their situation and find new ways of dealing with others' use. The group can support them in difficult circumstances.  

Project 28

The project's team seek to provide holistic packages of care to young people in the BANES area with problematic substance misuse support needs.

Project 28 works with people up to the age of 18 who are resident within BANES. 

The overall ethos behind the project is to provide a physical space in which young people want to spend time and can then access a range of services. Young people are offered support and assessment around their drug/alcohol use, employment and training needs and other 'soft' skills including: 

  • Counselling
  • Diversionary activities; music, residential, fishing, football, gym
  • Individual sessions
  • Groups
  • Open access
  • Healthy eating
  • Outreach
  • Schools & colleges
  • Workshops
  • Training
  • Family work
  • Voluntary work opportunities
  • Service user forum

Project 28 run a Young Carer's Group every Tuesday, for those aged 11-17 years that are affected by someone else's drug and alcohol use.

Overview

Comprehensive support for dependent and non dependent problem drinkers including provision for a community detox jointly run by SDAS.

What we do

DHI Bath offer support for problematic alcohol users in the form of one to ones, counselling and group work.

The team run group sessions for clients that give them practical advice and motivation that helps them on their journey towards abstinence. It also runs 1-1 counselling sessions so that clients can explore the reasons they turned to alcohol and how they can cut down or stop their use. Clients who have already stopped their use also benefits from groups and counselling to help them stay off alcohol. AS well as in Bath, the team also work in Midsomer Norton.

Clients who have problems with alcohol may see the team's Alcohol Liaison Workers who go to hospitals and GP surgeries to offer advice and information on cutting down drinking.

Clients can attend a Planning for Recovery Group where they get information on preparing them for life after a detox. There is also the Abstinence Group for those who have stopped drinking completely. The groups look at practical immediate solutions to problems with drinking. 

The Team also offers one-to-one counselling geared towards relapse prevention and is delivered using trained volunteers.

The Team meets with midwives, police, nurses and other hospital staff to encourage them to talk to patients with alcohol problems about their drinking.

Those needing a detox will be jointly assessed by SDAS, and will added to a waiting list. During this time they will be offered a group work programme and Alcohol information and Detox Drop-in sessions, which are ran jointly by our complex needs alcohol worker and a detox nurse from SDAS. They will be able to answer any question regarding detoxifying from alcohol.

All of the session outlined above are at The Beehive Yard. DHI also have a dry house which has one detox bed, for people who cannot detox in the community.

Overview

Criminal Justice Team
Provide support for people with substance misuse problems and who have been involved in crime.

RSVP
A service for men who have used violence or aggression against their female partners whilst under the influence.

What we do

Criminal Justice Team

DHI have a Criminal Justice Team working with offenders in BANES who are sentenced to receive treatment in the community as part of their punishment as an alternative to prison. These are called Drug Rehabilitation Requirement order or Alcohol Treatment Requirement orders. These are 6 month orders, and the offender has to come to DHI regularly depending on which order they are on. They are offered various support including group meeting, 1-1 sessions and drug testing. 

The CJIT also work in partnership with the police on several schemes that drug users who offend take part in voluntarily, to help them get back into independent living. It takes part in a Home Office Drug Intervention Programme (DIP) initiative to work with offenders and help them get housing, give them advice and support to help them stop relapsing. 

Reducing Substance and Violence Programme

Another initiative the team deliver is the Reducing Substance and Violence Programme (RSVP) where specialist interventions to domestic abuse perpetrators are delivered.

This is a specialist service for men who may become confrontational or aggressive towards their partner or family whilst they are under the influence. 

We understand that changing behaviour is a difficult process so RSVP aims to help clients understand the problems they are facing, and hopefully start to aid them to make some changes to improve relationships. 

A trained counsellor will offer up to 8 sessions looking at power and control in relationships, how substance misuse affects relationships and the effect on Children.

Directions from the centre of Bath: Walk past The Podium/Waitrose (on your right), then the Hilton Hotel. The Beehive Yard is a turning on the right after about 200 metres, opposite Walcot Kitchens. DHI is on the left of Beehive Yard as you walk down the slope. There is an underground car park below The Hilton and a street-level car park between The Hilton and Beehive Yard.

Transport: Buses 6 and 2 travel north on Walcot Street towards London Road, and buses 6, 13, 231, 232, 271, 272, and 273 travel south. The nearest Train Station is Bath Spa.

Overview

DHI runs a variety of employment, training and volunteer services. These include our social enterprise schemes, in which clients run commercial schemes whose profits go to paying running costs. We also run schemes in which we help find clients voluntary work with other organisations or to take up places in further education.

What we do

Clean Slate Training and Employment Programme

Clate Slate is a non-profit social enterprise that provides training and paid work for people facing barriers to employment. It runs a drop in on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm. 

Fresh Start 

Fresh Start is DHI's market stall social enterprise. 

Run by our service users, the weekly stall at Green Park Market in Bath distributes organic veg boxes on behalf of a local, community owned farm, plus a wide range of plants, flowers, lettuces and herbs from a market garden social enterprise. 

Education and Training Support

DHI runs an Education and Training Drop in at the Beehive on Thursday afternoons for clients to come and access support from advice about job applications and CVs to using computer to apply for jobs.
